Caratti had only completed a few laps in the first session when he suffered a puncture. The offending tyre was changed and he then went off on his first flying lap at the 150kph turn three and speared into the tyre wall. The teams data logger registered an 8G impact, enough to break the steering rack. New parts are on the way and will arrive in time for qualifying on Saturday. In the meantime Caratti can sample Subic’s famous beaches.
Second fastest was JoJo Silverio with a 1m 11.5 lap, he reports no problems and as the reigning lap record holder from last year’s race he obviously likes this track. Third fastest was Mark Goddard on a 1m 12.0 second lap, working his way through different set ups. Fourth was Enzo Pastor with a 1m 12.3, according to his team, closely followed by John O’Hara on 1m 12.5.
Next up and heading the Promotion Class was Dado Pena on 1m 13.2, despite suffering a broken input shaft in his gearbox. Dado was closely followed by Tyson Sy with 1m 13.3, the Promotion Class battle looks set to be one to watch with the two 16 year olds trading fastest laps. Richard Joson posted a 1m 13.5 with Roland recording a 1m14.2 before backing into the tyre wall at the Bus Stop chicane fortunately just damaging the front and rear wings. Kenkou Muira is still finding his way around the circuit but still recorded a respectable 1m 14.9 whilst Don Pastor completed the field with a 1m 16.1, still suffering from terminal oversteer. Autoplus were present but did not run whilst Pepon Marave is resigned to being a spectator this weekend after damaging the tub of his car on Tuesday.
As ever tyres, specifically how many laps they have run, make a huge difference to lap times. All the teams will not divulge what tyres they are running so we will not know who is really quick or not until official qualifying on Saturday May 29th. One thing for certain, new tyres or old, Christian Jones is going to take some catching.
