O’Hara and Mikola share the spoils – Aug 21 05

John O’Hara won the first race of the day, round seven of the AF3 Series from team mate James Winslow and Filipino Dado Pena whilst Ananda Mikola clinched a controversial round eight from Tyson Sy and Dado Pena. Lee Farrell and Moreno Soeprapto shared the Promotion Class spoils.

Pole man Tyson Sy fluffed the round seven start, eventually getting going last, allowing James Winslow to take the lead from Mikola and O’Hara from sixth on the grid. Mikola dropped out on the second lap with electrical problems handing third place to Dado Pena. Winslow looked to have the race under control but a charging O’Hara had other ideas and found a way past his team mate into a lead he held until the end. Dado paced himself to keep Sy a safe distance behind. Sy had made a great recovery drive from last to fourth place. Lee Farrell held off Soeprapto for the Promotion Class lead with Greg Murphy completing the podium. Barry Waugh, who had caused the original start to be aborted when he stalled, spun out when contesting third with Murphy. Christian Jones suffered a suspected blown head gasket and retired on lap two, his weekend over.

Round eight started under threatening skies with O’Hara taking the lead from Winslow and Pena. Mikola had started from the back but within three laps was already past Tyson Sy for fourth place. Going on to the sixth lap the heavens opened and almost the entire field skated off the flooded track. The race was red flagged and a long delay then entailed whilst the officials discussed who could take the restart. Farrell, Marave and Waugh were out with damaged cars whilst Murphy and Pastor had been towed in and where automatically excluded. The argument surrounded Winslow and O’Hara both of whom had been stranded in the gravel traps. They were assisted out of the gravel and drove back to the pits. The stewards decided they should not be allowed to restart and the team chose not to appeal the decision.

Pena started from pole for the second part of the race with Mikola second and Sy third. Mikola was soon past Pena and drove away from the field whilst Avila, Sy and Pena disputed second place. Sy forced his way past Avila and was soon past Pena, Avila following him through. Pena fought back and passed Avila at the tight chicane. They finished in that order with Moreno Soeprapto just holding off a charging JP Tuason for Promotion Class honours. The rest of the field was left in the pit garages surveying their damage or fuming at their exclusion.
