Dillon Battistini made a fantastic start and led the first lap from Jackson, Sy and a slow starting Pena. Battistini kept the flying Jackson at bay for four laps before the Irishman found a way past and drove off into the distance in an accomplished display of wet weather driving. Battistini fell back into the clutches of Tyson Sy and the pair started a frantic race mere inches apart. Jame Winslow had been in fifth but he dropped out after four laps leaving Moreno Soeprapto in that place with Promotions Class leader, LouMeng in a great sixth.
On lap 8 Gaby Dela Merced suffered a drive shaft failure and ground to a halt on the pit straight. Double waved yellows gave the drivers plenty of warning but Sy came out of the last turn right on Battistini’s tail and pulled to the Englishman’s right in what seemed to be an attempt to pass. Battistini moved to his right forcing a partially unsighted Sy to slam into the back of Merced’s stationary car. The unfortunate Sy’s car seemingly exploded in a cloud of debris and slammed into the wall about 200 meters from the initial impact. Fortunately Dallara make strong cars and Sy was able to walk away completely unhurt. The race was immediately stopped.
Provisional results have been issued but the stewards are still deliberating on what should be done with the two drivers involved in the accident.
